Orioles' Magic Number To Clinch Division Is 21

Posted on August 31, 2014

After the completion of the Aug. 30 games, the Baltimore Orioles' magic number to clinch the American League East division title is 21.

The Orioles defeated the Minnesota Twins, 3-2, Aug. 30, and the New York Yankees lost to the Blue Jays, 2-0, in Toronto.

Third baseman Jimmy Paredes drove in two of the Orioles' three runs, hitting an RBI double in the fourth inning and a solo home run in the sixth. Zach Britton pitched a scoreless ninth to record his 30th save of the season.

The Orioles' record now stands at 78-56, and Baltimore has an eight-game lead in the AL East.

Up next, the Orioles host the Twins Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, followed by a three-game set against the Cincinnati Reds at Camden Yards. The Yankees wrap up their road trip against the Blue Jays Aug. 31 before heading home to open a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox Sept. 2.

The Baltimore Orioles last won the AL East division title in 1997, losing to the Cleveland Indians in the American League Championship Series.
