PressBox, GBMC Honor Maryvale Prep's Mary Grace Marts With Unsung Hero Award

October 13, 2014

PressBox and GBMC have teamed up to honor one high school student athlete each month who demonstrate sportsmanship, school spirit, hard work and dedication.

The first honoree is Maryvale Prep field hockey player Mary Grace Marts.

GBMC Unsung Hero September 2014: Mary Grace Marts
L-R: GBMC marketing communications manager Jenifer Jardell, director of marketing Gregory Shaffer, Maryvale Prep president Tracey Ford, PressBox publisher Stan Charles, Mary Grace Marts, Maryvale Prep field hockey coach Erin Peer.

Marts, a ninth-grader, was nominated by her coach, Eric Peer who wrote:

"Mary Grace is a former field hockey defender who was forced to learn the midfield and forward positions due to a shortage of players. She willingly took on the challenge, listened to everything her coach said, and communicated with her teammates to make sure she was doing what was necessary for on-the-field success.

"As a student in her coach's classroom, she excels in Honors English (as well as all of her subjects) by completing the assignments on time and in a thorough manner. She is selfless and kind, and exemplifies true humility on and off the field."

After scoring four goals during Maryvale's first conference game of the season, Peer said that Marts "humbly accepted her team's praises, and immediately returned to a ready position. When she expressed surprise at the number of goals she had that game, her coach told her she shouldn't be shocked, because success comes to those who listen and learn with vigor."

Maryvale field hockey is currently 10-3-1 for the season, with a 7-0-1 record in the IAAM B Conference.

"[Marts] is truly an unsung member on the team," Peer wrote. "But her efforts and dedication are felt by all who know her."
