Week of Oct. 9

October 15

A huge fourth quarter comeback was enough to lift Maryland over rival Virginia, 28-26.  Maryland trailed 20-0, but scored 21 in the fourth quarter to eek out the win.  Keon Lattimore's 56-yard touchdown run gave Maryland its first lead and proved to be the game-winning score.

The Ravens offensive line will have a tough matchup today as they try to contain one of the most dominant players in the league, Julius Peppers.  The Ravens star defender, Ray Lewis, marvels at Peppers' dominance.

Senior quarterback Brian Hampton was injured early and Navy was never able to recover, falling to Rutgers, 34-0.  Navy, which averages 350.5 yards a game on the ground, mustered only 113 yards on 50 carries without Hampton.

Like Navy, the Towson Tigers were without their starting quarterback and were unable to manage much offense without him as they were shutout by UMass, 35-0.

NATIONAL

Magglio Ordonez's walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth downed the A's and has propelled the Detroit Tigers to their first world series since 1984. 

No.2 Florida is no longer unbeaten while No.3 USC barely held on against Arizona St. to keep their National Championship hopes alive.  Get up to date on what happened on the college gridiron on Saturday.

On a late touchdown run, Oklahoma star Adrian Peterson fell awkwardly, broke his collarbone and will be sidelined for the rest of the season.  Peterson is expected to enter next year's NFL Draft as a junior.

October 14

After a tough loss to Denver, the Ravens look to take their frustration out on Carolina. Carolina leads the series 2-0 but this is the first time the Panthers will face the Ravens in Baltimore. See how the Ravens match up against the Panthers on offense and defense. Home field advantage and their Monday night loss could just be the motivation the Ravens need to improve to 5-1.

The Orioles have acquired SS Luis Hernandez from the Atlanta Braves. Hernandez has a .246 batting average in six seasons with the Braves as a minor leaguer.

NATIONAL

The Pittsburg Steelers' Kendall Simmons will not be able to play in Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs because of an ice burn on his foot. The injury occurred after Simmons fell asleep with a cooling system attached to his foot while he attempted to treat a heel injury.

The Detroit Tigers defeated the Oakland Athletics 3-0 to take a 3-0 series lead in the ALCS. Detroit ace Kenny Rogers controlled the game, giving up just two hits in seven innings. The Tigers have now won a franchise record six consecutive postseason games.

A plane carrying Alex Rodriguez overran a runway at Bob Hope Airport on Friday. None the passengers aboard the plane were injured.

Arnold Palmer announced his retirement from professional golf after a rough start in a PGA Champions Tour event on Friday. Although Palmer finished the round, he stopped keeping score after four holes. Palmer's last PGA Tour event was a record 50th consecutive appearance at Augusta for the 2004 Masters.

October 13

Corey Ivy has been released from a Pittsburgh hospital after suffering a kidney tear in the Ravens' Monday night loss to the Broncos.  His status for the season is still up in the air.

Maake Kemoeatu will be returning to M&T Bank Stadium for the first time as a member of another team when his Panthers travel to Baltimore to face the Ravens.  Kemoeatu spent his first four seasons in Baltimore after making the team as an undrafted free agent in 2002.

The Baltimore Blast announced yesterday that David Bascome will serve as assistant coach. He will continue to play while assisting coach Danny Kelly on the bench.

Wizards guard Antonio Daniels is day-to-day after spraining his left ankle during practice.

NATIONAL

Carlos Beltran's two-run home run elevated the Mets to a 2-0 win in Game one of the NLCS.

Matt Ryan and Kevin Challenger hooked up for two touchdowns through the air as Boston College dominated Virginia Tech en route to a 22-3 victory.

Investigators continue to search the scene of Wednesday's tragic plane crash which killed Yankees pitcher Corey Lidle and his instructor. 

The Nationals are denying a report that said Alfonso Soriano turned down a 5-year, $70 million offer from the team.

Breaking NewsESPN.com reports that New York Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle was the pilot of a small plane that crashed into a New York City apartment building on Wednesday. Lidle and a second person in the plane were both killed.

October 12

When the Panthers take the field on Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium to face the Ravens, they will be without linebacker Dan Morgan, who is out for the rest of the season after suffering the fifth concussion of his career earlier this season.
