LAX: Jays, Terps, Greyhounds Stay Undefeated
By Barrett Neale

While Maryland, Loyola and Johns Hopkins stayed undefeated, not all local men's lacrosse teams had a good weekend. Here are the highs and lows from the second weekend of the lacrosse season.

Maryland 20, Georgetown 8: Senior attackman Grant Catalino led the No. 3 Terps (2-0) with five goals and an assist as Maryland used a strong second half to pull away from the No. 14 Hoyas (1-1). Sophomore midfielders Curtis Holmes and Kevin Cooper provided a lift off the bench with team highs in ground balls (eight) and caused turnovers (four), respectively. Midfielder Max Seligmann led Georgetown with three goals and an assist.

Loyola 3, Towson 2: Senior attackman Matt Langan scored the game-winning goal with 3:41 left to give Loyola (2-0) another come-from behind victory. Senior goalkeeper Travis Love and the Towson defense held Loyola scoreless for more than 45 minutes and the Tigers (0-2) took a 2-1 lead off of goals from senior midfielder Pat Britton and sophomore midfielder Alec Jernstedt, but Loyola's two-goal fourth quarter secured the victory.

North Carolina 10, Navy 8:
The Midshipmen (1-2) led by as many as three goals, but lost a close game for the second-straight week, this time to the Tar Heels (2-1). Freshman attackman Sam Jones led Navy with two goals and two assists and junior goalkeeper R.J. Wickham had a strong showing, despite the loss, with 14 saves and eight ground balls. North Carolina Freshman midfielder R.G. Keenan, a Boys' Latin graduate, won 18 of 22 face-offs.

Rutgers 12, UMBC 5:
A hat trick from junior attackman Kevin Hover helped the Scarlet Knights (3-0) stay undefeated and spoil the Retrievers' (1-1) home opener. The teams were almost even in shots -- Rutgers had 30 and UMBC had 26 -- but the Retrievers had only nine shots on goal. Five different players scored for UMBC, including sophomore attackman Scott Jones, who now leads the team with five goals this season.

Johns Hopkins 16, Siena 6:
Nine different Blue Jays (3-0) scored, with five points each from senior attackman Chris Boland and sophomore midfielder John Greeley, during their home opener against the Saints (1-2). Senior midfielder Matt Dolente picked up a game-high nine ground balls for Johns Hopkins and sophomore goalkeeper Pierce Bassett had 12 saves. Junior attackman Bryan Neufeld led Siena with two goals and one assist.

AVILA NAMED ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
With the Patriot League men's basketball tournament approaching, the league office has announced its all-conference selections, and Navy freshman J.J. Avila was named Rookie of the Year.

Avila ranks first on the team in steals (51) and second in scoring (11.6), rebounding (5.2) and assists (68). Among Navy freshmen all-time, Avila ranks first in 3-pointers attempted (158) and second in 3-pointers made (52).

Junior Jordan Sugars made the All-Patriot League Second Team, and freshman Isaiah Roberts joined Avila on the All-Rookie Team. Sugars is third in the conference in scoring (16.2 points per game) and seventh in rebounding (6.1 per game). His 67 3-pointers this season rank eighth in program history for 3-pointers made during a single season. Roberts averages 5.5 points per game and 2.1 rebounds per game, while totaling 42 assists and 33 steals this season.
