Looking Ahead To Lax Weekend
By Todd McElwee
During the past few days, we've surveyed the men's Division I landscape, ranking the top 25 men's outfits. Now, let's take a peek at the best of the rest of the lacrosse world, preview the coming weekend and play soothsayer.
Men's
Division II
1. Limestone
2011 Record: 15-2
Conference: Carolinas
Head Coach: J.B. Clarke
The Saints return conference Co-Player of the Year honorees Shayne Jackson (32 goals, 50 assists) and Riley Loewen (54 goals, 20 assists), who helped them lead Division II in scoring offense at 17.27 goals per game.
Division III
1. Salisbury
2011 Record: 21-1
Conference: Capital Athletic
Head Coach: Jim Berkman
Men's lacrosse's most prosperous program is the obvious choice for the top slot. The senior trio of attackman Matt Cannone (49 goals, 39 assists), attackman Erik Krum (52 goals, 16 assists) and middie Sam Berkman (55 goals, 23 assists) won't be slowed down by anybody. A 10th national title is likely on the horizon.
Women's
Division I
1. Northwestern
2011 Record: 21-2
Conference: American Lacrosse
Head Coach: Kelly Amonte Hiller
Tewaaraton winner Shannon Smith (86 goals, 42 assists in 2011) is poised to lead the Wildcats to their seventh title in eight seasons.
Division II
1. Adelphi
2011 Record: 20-0
Conference: Northeast 10
Head Coach: Rob Grella
Three-time defending Adelphi is close to a sure thing to be the last team standing. Senior attackman Erica Devito had 106 points (77 goals, 29 assists) in 2011.
Division III
1. Gettysburg
2011 Record: 19-4
Conference: Centennial
Head Coach: Carol Cantele
Mount de Sales product Hannah Church, a senior attackman, registered 86 goals and 13 assists last season in leading the Bullets to the national title.
Game of the Weekend: Penn State vs. North Carolina men at Kennesaw, Ga., 1 p.m.
It's insane and irresponsible to put too much stock into an early February contest played in an Atlanta suburb, but the Nittany Lions can assert themselves as a bonafide force if they upset the Tar Heels.
