Chen's Outstanding Effort Gives O's Back-to-Back Shutouts
Wei-Yin Chen threw seven innings of six-hit ball Sunday, giving the Orioles consecutive shutout wins against the Braves. Chen followed Jason Hammel's one-hit effort from June 16, showing once again that the O's have a top-shelf duo with Chen and Hammel on the mound. The Orioles are 17-0 this season when their starters pitch at least seven innings.
Chen's gone beyond being a surprise at this point. The Taiwanese import is just a very good pitcher and is frustrating opposing hitters with his rapidly developing arsenel. He fielded his position well Sunday, and had to, because he got them to ground out regularly.
It's safe to say that Chen, at 7-2 with a 3.36 ERA, is not a fluke.
The same could be said for the Orioles. The Orioles are now 39-27. Last season, the Orioles didn't have their 39th win until July 19.
