Hammel's Injury Could Make Orioles Look Desperate
Jason Hammel is the best Orioles starter this year, but the way he left the mound Friday didn't look encouraging. He's had pain in his knee for weeks now, and he grimaced during the fourth inning and limped off after talking with the team's staff. The pain was evident.
By being so vocal recently about being a playoff contender and making a push for the postseason, the Orioles are setting the bar high. Hammel was one of two starters the club could actually count on each night. The Orioles, if they really think they're in the postseason hunt, will need to make a push for a pitcher in the trade market.
Hammel's injury, if it's truly serious, could mean the Orioles will have to sacrifice a prized gem, and vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette will have to determine how much the team is willing to deal to land a top starter.
