Orioles Fall To Red Sox; Betemit To DL
The Orioles had won nine of 11 games and five straight before Thursday's 6-3 loss to the Red Sox.
The Orioles, who took the first two games of the Boston series, struggled after the first inning with Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz. Buchholz went eight innings, giving up eight hits and three runs. Baltimore pitcher Chris Tillman lasted just 4.2 innings, giving up six hits and three runs.
A wild pitch by Tillman in the fifth allowed Carl Crawford to score and Dustin Pedroia tied the game at 3 a hitter later off an Adrian Gonzalez sacrifice fly. Relief pitcher Luis Ayala gave up four hits and three runs in the sixth inning and took the loss.
The Orioles have had virtually everything go their way during the last two weeks. A loss, no matter in what style, was bound to happen.
The Birds will be without third baseman Wilson Betemit, who hadn't played much after Manny Machado got called up from the minors, as he nurses a right-wrist injury on the 15-day DL. Betemit had a small cartilage tear in his wrist.
Machado went 2-for-10 against the Red Sox. He is 7-for-23 during his first week in the majors.
