O's Squander Opportunity To Claim Sole Possession Of AL East Lead
A loss was bound to happen at some point, but unfortunately for the Orioles, it came Friday, hours after the Yankees lost to the Rays, 6-4.
The A's beat the Orioles, 3-2, thanks to a game-ending play in which Xavier Avery was caught stealing second base.
The Orioles (81-63) scored first on an error during the third inning. They tied the game at 2 during the fifth after a Chris Davis home run.
But the A's got the big play in the bottom half of that inning, when Jonny Gomes' single scored one.
Left-hander Joe Saunders took the loss for the Birds, going six innings and giving up seven hits and the three runs.
The Orioles will play their second game in Oakland at 9:05 p.m. Saturday.
