River Hill senior Tommy Brenton set a state record, hitting 19 of 20 free throws, to lead the Hawks to their first state championship. Brenton totaled 28 points and snared 10 rebounds as River Hill defeated Bethesda-Chevy Chase, 60-51.
He made his first 17 straight free throws in the championship game, and sealed the win with one (after his first miss) to give the Hawks a seven-point lead win less than a minute to go in the game.
The 6-foot-4 senior had 30 in the semi-finals against Mervo to lead River Hill to a 62-53 victory. Brenton had 58 points and 20 rebounds in the two final games of his career for coach Matt Graves. He also had five assists, five steals and five blocked shots in the wins.
Brenton averaged 22 points a game this season for the 23-5 Hawks.
