Rec Spotlight: Lutherville Girls Junior A Each week PressBox is proud to spotlight a local rec team. Hats off to this week's lacrosse team, Lutherville Girls Junior A for winning the MYLA Championship.
Coach's Buzz: It All Takes Money Outfitting youth teams can cost as much as or more than outfitting high school teams. Registration and donations do not begin to cover what it costs to field teams for a season, not to mention travel to out-of-state tournaments. Enter the world of youth sports fundraising.
Rec Spotlight: Timber Rattlers Each week PressBox is proud to spotlight a local rec team. Hats off to this week's baseball team, the Cockeysville/Carroll Manor Timber Rattlers. Win or lose, the team exhibited exemplary sportsmanship and played the game with respect.
Coach's Buzz: Nothing New For Our Ravens The Ravens are doing their part for the area's youngsters, giving 250 young football players the chance to play on the same field as the Ravens.
Rec Spotlight: Lutherville Midget AA Hats off to the Lutherville Midget AA lacrosse team. The team won the Maryland Youth Lacrosse Association (MYLA) Championship.
Coach's Buzz: County Zones Out on Youth Sports Baltimore County zoning laws have left the Middle River Renegades and other rec leagues fighting to get the word out about registration dates and other events.
Rec Spotlight: Cockeysville Muckdogs Each week PressBox is proud to spotlight a local rec team. Hats off to the Cockeysville Muckdogs baseball team. The team went undefeated in the 13-15 age groups with a 10-0 record and won the league championship.
Coach's Buzz: The People In The Striped Shirts Parents, before you scream at a referee, remember the games would not be played without them. If you seriously question a call, ask for clarification after the game. Let the officials do their jobs.
Rec Spotlight: Maryland Mudhens Each week PressBox is proud to spotlight a local rec team. Hats off to the under-11 Maryland Mudhens baseball team from Bel Air.
Coach's Buzz: Mandatory Playing Time In youth sports, playing time is the No. 1 conflict between coaches and parents. Baltimore-area rec leagues should be applauded for expanding divisions to create more teams with fewer players each, increasing playing time for all.
Rec Team Spotlight: Falston Freedom Each week PressBox is proud to spotlight a local rec team. Hats off to the Fallston Freedom. The team is undefeated at the Under-9 level with a 36-0-1 record.
Coach's Buzz: Why Is Youth Baseball Striking Out? For a variety of reasons, from the popularity of spring soccer and lacrosse, to parents' increasingly busy lifestyles, Maryland's kids are opting out of baseball.
Rec Spotlight: Jarrettsville Tyker A Each week PressBox is proud to spotlight a local rec team. Hats off to the Jarrettsville Tyker A lacrosse team. The team completed an undefeated (19-0) season by winning the LaxSplash 7-8 A division.
Coach's Buzz: What is the Spirit of the Rule? Within the next few weeks fall leagues will be issuing their new rule books. And there is one rule in particular that needs to be addressed -- the so-called slaughter or mercy rule.
