The official announcement was made this morning. And despite a campaign including U.S. soccer star Landon Donovan, President Bill Clinton and Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman, the United States will not be hosting the 2022 World Cup.

Qatar was selected as host of the 2022 World Cup, beating out bids by the United States, Australia, Japan and South Korea.

Russia will be hosting the 2018 World Cup, despite President Vladimir Putin’s last-minute decision not to travel to Zurich to make a final push for his country. England was among the countries hoping to host the Cup in eight years.

Americans are not happy with the slight -- and where else would they let their feeling be heard than Twitter.
