MASN Launching New Baseball Show

By Dave Hughes, DCRTV.com

The Baltimore-based Mid-Atlantic Sports Network launches a baseball-centric program, "The Mid-Atlantic Sports Report," at 5 p.m. on March 31.

The 90-minute show, which will air Monday through Friday, will feature a panel of four baseball experts -- Tom Davis, Dave Johnson, Phil Wood, and Mel Antonen -- who will discuss news from the Orioles, the Nationals and Major League Baseball.

Davis, Johnson, and Wood used to host Saturday's "Talking Baseball," which has aired on MASN during past seasons.

Examiner sports media columnist Jim Williams said the "The Mid-Atlantic Sports Report" would feature content equally divided between the Nationals and Orioles, and serve as a lead-in to the "Nats Xtra" and "O's Xtra" pregame shows.

The new program will include live segments with guests from Nationals Park and Camden Yards, and will feature live batting practice look-ins, Williams said.

MASN will resurrect its MASN2 channel for the baseball season on March 31. The HD version of MASN is available locally on Comcast channel 845, with MASN2 on 844. The standard def versions of MASN are on different channels on various area Comcast systems. Check your local listings.

Comcast SportsNet pens a new carriage deal with DC United and will also provide regional coverage of 2011 Major League Soccer.

CSN will air 17 regular-season DC United games this season, beginning with the March 19 season-opening match against the Columbus Crew.

Dave Johnson starts his 16th year as the TV voice of the team, and Thomas Rongen will return to the broadcast booth as game analyst. Russ Thaler will again handle sideline reporting duties.

"We are proud to continue our partnership with United and look forward to another great season of comprehensive soccer coverage on our network," Comcast SportsNet Senior Vice President and General Manager Rebecca Schulte said. "The combination of our news, digital and live-game coverage of the black and red makes Comcast SportsNet the one-stop source for their loyal and passionate fan base."

In addition to this week's season opener against Columbus, highlights of this season's regional television schedule on Comcast SportsNet include March 26 at New England, May 14 against the defending MLS Cup-champion Colorado Rapids and the team's first visit to the expansion Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

"We're excited to again be working alongside our long-time partners at Comcast SportsNet," said United President and CEO Kevin Payne. "They continue to place tremendous effort and resources to bring the black and red into the homes of our supporters.

The Washington Times is planning to resurrect its sports department with its March 21 edition. The Times axed its coverage of local news, sports and entertainment in late 2009, following a massive personnel cutback.

Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb serves as an in-studio college basketball analyst for Comcast SportsNet's coverage of the first round of the NCAA men's tournament. He'll appear on several additions of "SportsNet Central" and "Washington Post Live."

Segments featuring McNabb will be re-aired at various times and will be available at CSNBaltimore.com.

Former Philadelphia Eagle McNabb, a 12-year veteran of the NFL, spent two seasons as a guard on the Syracuse University basketball team following a stand-out hoops career at Mt. Carmel High School in Illinois.

Comments:
It's very nice that MASN is going to have a baseball show but it looks like they're "going Washington". Riggins is still on and I, for one, have no interest in Washington or any of their teams. There is no one on MASN from this area on a daily basis. I know their network goes south of here but I also believe they air north of here also.
