Blue Jays Downed By Denver

Win or lose, Johns Hopkins was headed back to Baltimore after Saturday afternoon's NCAA Tournament semifinal against Denver at Hofstra.
The question was whether the third-seeded Blue Jays would return home optimistically, looking ahead to Championship Weekend at M&T Bank Stadium, or sadly, thinking about what may have been. Unfortunately for head coach Dave Pietramala and his team, the latter proved to be true as the Blue Jays fell to No. 6 Denver, 14-9.
The Pioneers (15-2) advance to play seventh-seeded Virginia next Saturday afternoon.
As it did last weekend against Hofstra, Hopkins (13-3) got off to a slow start, this time trailing 3-1 after the first period. Unlike the way they played last Saturday at Homewood Field, the Blue Jays couldn't claw their way back. Denver built a 7-3 halftime advantage and put the game away late.
Phil Castronova brought Hopkins to within 8-7 with a goal off a Chris Boland feed at 7:16 during the third. From there, the Pioneers went on a 6-0 run and kept the Blue Jays at bay for more than 15 minutes to punch their ticket to Baltimore.
Boland, a senior attackman, had two goals and four assists for Hopkins. Kyle Wharton had three goals, while John Ranagan added a goal and an assist. Pierce Bassett made eight saves. Matt Dolente won 16 of 26 faceoffs.
Cameron Flint, Mark Matthews and Todd Baxter each produced three points for Denver.
