Full Closure Slated For Streets Sept. 1
By Barrett Neale
To accommodate the construction of the Baltimore Grand Prix race track and the events of race weekend, a number of downtown streets will be closed.
"In race week, the closures will start Monday night (Aug. 29) prior to Labor Day," said Frank Murphy, deputy director of the Baltimore City Department of Transportation. "Each night, additional intersections and streets will close until during the day Thursday (Sept. 1), when everything will reach full closure so they can finish building a track."
Streets that are part of the track, such as Pratt Street, Conway Street, and portions of Russell Street and I-395, will be completely closed. South of Pratt Street, the roads from Light Street over to and including Greene Street will be closed.
Randall Scott, chief of traffic for the Baltimore City Department of Transportation, said some of those surrounding streets would be open at night, once that day's Grand Prix festivities had concluded. But during the day, navigating through downtown will be challenging.
"Because so many streets are closed, the remaining streets are going to have to do a lot of double duty," Murphy said. "They're going to be rather busy. I guess the general thought is you can use Martin Luther King Boulevard to get around the track if you're going from points south to points north, but be aware that they're going to have a lot of company. So if you're not destined for downtown, steering clear would keep you away from the congested areas."
Murphy also suggested Hilton Parkway on the West side of the course, Wolfe Street on the East and North Avenue on the North as streets to use when seeking a way around the race track.
