Ravens Get Good Preseason TV Ratings

The Aug. 11 Ravens preseason debut telecast was the most-watched TV show in Baltimore last week and the most-watched program in the Washington, D.C., market for the night.
The Ravens' battle against the Philadelphia Eagles, shown on both Channel 11/WBAL and Comcast SportsNet, got a 20.4 rating and 226,000 households in the Baltimore market.
The Ravens also scored a 7.1 rating and approximately 170,000 households in the D.C. market, where the game appeared on Channel 7/WJLA and CSN.
The Redskins' preseason debut against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Aug. 12 drew a 16.3 rating in the D.C. market, with about 390,000 households for the broadcast, which aired on Comcast SportsNet and on Channel 4/WRC.
The game also drew a 3.9 rating and about 39,000 households in the Baltimore TV market, where it appeared only on CSN.

We're hearing about some changes at Baltimore-area sports talker WNST, 1570 AM.
Rex Snider is gone. Glenn Clark moves to afternoons. Luke Jones is now morning show producer and co-host.
In his blog at wnst.net, station owner Nestor Aparicio confirmed that Jones joined the Towson station as Drew Forrester's new co-host, producer, and "whipping boy" on "The Morning Reaction."
Glenn Clark gets moved to the 2-6 p.m. show on weekdays, replacing Rex Snider, who has submitted his resignation.
"I enjoyed Rex Snider's passion and I really wish him well in the future," Aparicio wrote. "He was one of many folks who I was fortunate to meet and afford an opportunity to live the dream of doing a daily radio show at WNST and I hope this will launch him to greater
things. He's a man of integrity and I enjoyed watching his brand -- and his hair -- grow."
Aparicio also said he and Clark would re-institute "The Friday Football Frenzy" with "a bevy of rock star guests every Friday afternoon as we go deep into the purple fall and beyond."
Thyrl Nelson will continue hosting the "Mobtown Sports Beat" from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Ryan Chell will remain as producer and newsman for WNST's midday and afternoon shows.

Brett Haber, who recently announced he was leaving the top sports anchor gig at Washington's Channel 9/WUSA, has been named to the Tennis Channel's U.S. Open broadcast team. The grand slam starts Aug. 29 in New York.
"This furthers the belief that Haber left WUSA for a regular position with Tennis Channel," a source tells us. "He has done a bunch of stuff already with them this year, including the French Open, the big tournament in Indian Wells, Calif., and the Legg Mason here in D.C. -- among others."
Still no word whether Haber's new Tennis Channel gig is full-time or part-time. No replacement has been announced for Haber, who will be staying at Gannett's WUSA through late August.

Steve Kolbe is out as the radio voice of the Washington Capitals after 14 seasons. John Walton, the former voice of the Hershey Bears, has been tapped to become the Caps' new radio play-by-play announcer.
According to the Capitals Insider blog at washingtonpost.com, Kolbe had been working on a year-to-year contract with the Caps but was informed in July that the team planned to open up the position to others.
He was welcome to apply, which he did. Walton said he interviewed for the position last week and was informed last night that he had been hired.

ESPN 980's Rick "Doc" Walker, who has been serving as a sideline reporter for the Redskins' past preseason TV broadcasts, moves into the TV broadcast booth to be a color analyst for the first time for the Aug. 19 game on Channel 4/WRC and Comcast SportsNet.
Joe Theismann, the regular color guy, has a preexisting conflict, so Walker will pair with play-by-play man Mike Patrick in the booth. Charles Mann will replace Walker on the sidelines, reports Dan Steinberg at the Washington Post's D.C. Sports Bog.
