Stan 'The Fan' Charles' MLB Power Rankings

By Stan "The Fan" Charles

Including games on Sept. 9

This is a terrible week to get overwhelmed, but with the death of former Ravens owner Art Modell and the beginning of the Ravens season, something had to give. I promise to better prepare for the remainder of the season and to not miss again.

Having said that, here are the abbreviated Stan "The Fan" MLB Power Rankings for the week of Sept. 3-9.

1. Texas Rangers (83-57 overall, 4-3 since Sept. 3) -- The Rangers are back on top. Can they stay there?

2. Cincinnati Reds (84-57, 2-4) -- As closer Aroldis Chapman goes, so go the Reds' ultimate hopes.

3. Washington Nationals (86-54, 5-2) -- Normally, the Nationals' record would have put them on top. Any other team that lost starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg (15-6) for the year would have dropped even further.

4. San Francisco Giants (79-61, 3-3) -- The Giants are the least frightening of the top five teams. Resiliency counts for something.

5. Tampa Bay Rays (77-63, 4-2) -- With Evan Longoria back, B.J. Upton on a tear and key injuries to other division foes, all is looking good … for the moment.

6. New York Yankees (79-61, 3-4) -- The hits just keep on coming as first baseman Mark Teixeira goes missing for 10-14 days. A healthy dose of Andy Pettitte in the starting rotation would look pretty good to pinstripers about now.

7. Atlanta Braves (81-60, 6-1) -- The Braves had a big week, with lots of contributors. Their pitching is clicking now, and the second-base battle between Dan Uggla and Martin Prado shouldn't be a distraction.

8. Los Angeles Angels (77-63, 6-0) -- Someone forgot to stick a stake through the Angels' heart. Now, we'll find out whether the Angels have any (heart, that is).

9. Baltimore Orioles (78-62, 4-3) -- The Orioles are tiptoeing deeper and deeper into September. The loss of right fielder Nick Markakis hurts, but it doesn't kill their chances for a postseason berth.

10. Oakland Athletics (79-60, 3-3) -- If the Mets were Amazin' in 1969, then the A's are Amazin' in 2012. Oakland probably deserves to be a spot or two higher in the rankings, but it has the toughest schedule of all contenders.

11. Chicago White Sox (75-64, 3-3) -- Increasingly, it looks as if American League Central leaders are battling it out for one postseason spot within the division. Who is to blame for that?

12. Detroit Tigers (73-66, 1-5) -- If the Athletics are Amazin' for winning, can a team in Detroit be Amazin' for what it may not accomplish?

13-17. St. Louis Cardinals (75-65, 3-3), Los Angeles Dodgers (74-67, 2-4), Philadelphia Phillies (69-71, 5-1), Pittsburgh Pirates (72-67, 2-4) and Milwaukee Brewers (69-71, 4-3) -- All five of these teams are duking it out for the final National League wild-card spot. The Cards and Dodgers hold a distinct edge, the Pirates have fallen and can't get up, and the Phillies and Brewers look as if they'll run out of season a bit too soon.

18. Arizona Diamondbacks (69-72, 3-3)

19. Kansas City Royals (63-77, 3-4)

20. Seattle Mariners (67-74, 2-4)

21. San Diego Padres (66-75, 4-2)

22. Miami Marlins (63-78, 4-3)

23. Minnesota Twins (58-82, 3-3)

24. Toronto Blue Jays (64-75, 4-2)

25. New York Mets (65-75, 1-5)

26. Boston Red Sox (63-78, 1-5)

27. Colorado Rockies (56-83, 1-6)

28. Chicago Cubs (54-86, 3-4)

29. Cleveland Indians (59-81, 3-3)

30. Houston Astros (44-96, 3-3)
