By Benjamin Krimmel
Mike Wright, Pitcher, Double-A Bowie
Baysox right-handed pitcher Mike Wright continued his strong run with another solid outing Aug. 1, improving his season-long record to 9-2. Wright allowed three runs on eight hits spanning 7.0 innings, striking out six, during the Baysox's win against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats Aug. 1.
That was the fifth straight quality start for Wright, a third-round 2011 draft pick for the Orioles, and his twelfth of 2013. During this five-game stretch, Wright allowed nine earned runs in 32.2 innings (2.52 ERA) with a 1.13 WHIP and 31 strikeouts.
Wright has started 21 games this year, pitching to a 3.59 ERA spanning 115.1 innings.
Wynston Sawyer, Catcher, Single-A Delmarva
Wynston Sawyer, 21, has had a successful stretch during the best year of his young professional career.
From July 18-Aug. 5, Sawyer has batted .341 with a 1.063 OPS for the Shorebirds. During a five-game stretch from July 29-Aug. 3, Sawyer went 7-for-15 with three doubles, two home runs and seven RBIs.
Sawyer, an eighth-round draft pick for the O's out of Scripps Ranch High School in San Diego, is in his second full year at Delmarva after playing 2011 with the Aberdeen IronBirds. Sawyer is in the midst of his best year; he is batting 17 points higher than his career best, has already eclipsed last year's extra-base hit total with 20 and has a .358 on-base percentage, as of Aug. 5.
NEWS AND NOTES
Orioles Honor Yastrzemski
It hasn't taken long for outfielder Mike Yastrzemski, the grandson of Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, to live up to his family name. A 14th-round draft pick for the Birds this year, Yastrzemski was named Orioles Minor League Offensive Player of the Month for July -- his first full month in professional baseball.
Playing with Class-A short-season Aberdeen, Yastrzemski hit .344, batted in 12 runners with 12 of his 31 hits going for extra bases during 26 games in July.
Four IronBirds To All-Star Game
The IronBirds will have four representatives at the 2013 New York-Penn League All-Star Game Aug. 13, and the O's drafted all of them this year. Trey Mancini, Austin Wynns and the aforementioned Yastrzemski will all start the game, while Jimmy Yacabonis, featured in the July 29 Minor League Spotlight, will be available out of the bullpen.
Garcia, Hendrickson Combine For Shutout
File this one under the "Wait? What year is it?" file for a strange 2013 baseball season. Triple-A Norfolk won, 9-0, Aug. 4 against Charlotte thanks to an exceptional pitching performance from 36-year-old Freddy Garcia and 39-year-old Mark Hendrickson. The two allowed four hits and struck out seven.
In other Tides news, infielder Jonathan Schoop hit a home run for the second consecutive game Aug. 2, and his fourth in five games for Norfolk.
