Kelly's 67 Paces MSGA Qualifiers

By John Stewart, MSGA
Brendan Kelly, who plays from the Naval Academy Golf Club, fired a 4-under-par 67, and led all scorers in qualifying for the MSGA Amateur and Open championships during two days of play involving 447 players and three courses.

Seeking to advance in both competitions, Kelly, playing at the Timbers at Troy Golf Club in Elkridge, had five birdies in a 4-under-par round of 67, two strokes clear of all other qualifiers. A year ago, Kelly shot 68 at his home course to lead all scorers.

At Timbers (May 5), Kelly, a year out of high school, was followed by high school student Charlie Winegardner, 69. Don Slebodnik, from Night Hawk Golf Center in Gambrills, was the low pro at 71. The Amateur cut was at 78 with 30 players, and the Open cut was at 76 with 24 players.

At Montgomery Village GC (May 5) in Gaithersburg, Jeff Rosenberg, pro at Little Biennett GC in Clarksburg, and amateur Doug Hurson, from Columbia CC, topped the leaderboard with 1-under-par 70s. Rosenberg's round included three birdies, two bogeys, while Hurson, a rising senior at William & Mary, also had three birdies -- two long putts and a chip-in -- and two bogeys. Professional Gary Mankulish Jr., from Lakewood CC, had three birdies, including one at the 18th to get even. The Amateur cut was 75 with 36 players, and the Open 74 with 38 players.

At Hunt Valley GC (May 6), Chris Coleman, from Virginia Beach National GC, was low pro with a 2-under-par 69, and John Howson, Towson G&CC, was low amateur with 70. Elkridge Club pro Joe Franz and amateurs Larry Sheets, Hunt Valley GC, and Michael Mulieri, TPC Avenel, had 71s. The Amateur cut was 76 with 34 players, and the Open 74 with 24 players.

The 87th Amateur championship will be held June 5-8, at Woodholme CC in Pikesville. The 87th Open will be held July 14-16, at Fountain Head CC in Hagerstown.
