Matt Simone won three of the first four holes on the back nine and parred the rest needed for a 3-and-2 victory over Serge Hogg in the championship pairing of the 11th annual Baltimore Municipal Golf Corporation Match Play Tournament at Mount Pleasant Golf Course Sunday.
A chip-in birdie at No. 10 sent Simone, a 24-year-old John Hopkins University graduate student from Pittsburgh, ahead to stay, and he finished even par for the round.
In wrapping up the win at No. 16, Simone, had it 20 feet for birdie and Hogg 18 feet. Simone left his on the low side 2 feet from the cup, and when Hogg missed and Simone made, it was over.
It was a tough loss for Hogg, one of the pre-tournament favorites. He grew up playing the course, was a product of its successful junior program and had won two Maryland Amateur Stroke Play titles over the same 6,726-yard, par-71 layout.
