Laubach Wins Baltimore Seniors Championship

By John Stewart

Blair Laubach birdied the 17th hole for what turned out to be the winning margin. His 34-35--69 at Forest Park Golf Course was good for a one-stroke victory in the 15th annual Seniors Championship of the Baltimore Municipal Golf Corporation, August 8.

His tour of the 5,815-yard, par-71 course included three front-nine birdies and the one at 17, with nine 1-putts on his way to a total of 28.

"I was even through 7, then birdies at 8-9 got me started," said the winner, 51, whose last previous title had been the BMGC's rainy Fall Publinx in 1997.

Bill Wingerd followed with 34-36--70, trailed by Louis Wright, 35-36--71; James Townley, 37-35--72 and Jeff Amrhein, 35-35--72. Wingerd was 3 under par through No. 15 then bogeyed the 16th and 18th, while Wright had four birdies in getting to 1 under for 17 holes, before slipping back with a bogey at the final hole.

It took playoffs to decide age-group prize-winners in two categories. John Fink (85-16--69) edged Roman Clark, Sr., (83-14--69) for low net in 55-59 with a par at the first extra hole, and Marvin White (74-8--66) won with a par at the first extra hole against George Mullaney (82-16--66) in 65-69. Earlier, Fink had bogey at 18 and Clark, double-bogey, while White dropped into a tie with a bogey at 18 after Mullaney had made par.
