Maria Sharapova beat out Ellicott City, Md. native Beatrice Capra, 6-0, in the third round of the women's singles at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Capra, ranked No. 371 on the Women's Tennis Association tour prior to the Open. The 5-foot-9 tennis phenom was contacted by the United States Tennis Association to play in a small tournament with a big prize -- a wild card trip to the Open.
Capra's pro career began just one year ago. And though she entered the Open with a resume eight wins and only two losses, this is in her first big-league tournament.
Capra beat 18th-seed Aravane Rezai in the second round of the Open Sept. 2 to pit her against veteran tennis champ Sharapova.
The teenager currently resides in Delray Beach, Fla. to train at Evert's Academy with tennis coach Chris Evert.
