Worldwide Olympic Convention Coming To Chicago

By Ray Schulte, SchulteAuctions.com

In 2010, the International Olympic Committee awarded to the Olympin Collectors Club rights to organize and manage the prestigious 2011 World Olympic Collectors Fair, for the first time ever, in North America.

The Olympin Collectors Club recently announced the World Olympic Collectors Fair will be held in Chicago, Aug. 3-7, in conjunction with the 32nd Annual National Sports Collectors Convention (The National).

The World Olympic Collectors Fair will feature Olympic pin and memorabilia collectors and dealers from across the globe. Members of the International Olympic Committee and special VIPs will be attending the event, including IOC marketing director Gerhard Heiberg and 1968 Olympic gold medalist Dick Fosbury, both scheduled to participate in the official Opening Ceremony of the 17th World Olympic Collectors Fair.

The National created an Olympic Pavilion (Hall B) where Olympic memorabilia collectors and exhibitors will set up to buy, sell or trade unique items such as Olympic prize medals, game-used equipment, torches, pins, uniforms, posters, commemorative medals, stamps, coins, programs, photos, tickets and much more. There will be something for everyone, from beginners to advanced collectors.

The Olympin Collectors Club, based near Lake Placid, N.Y., is the oldest and largest Olympic pin and memorabilia collector's organization in the world.

The World Olympic Collectors Fair is the largest Olympic memorabilia fair held annually.  Previous fairs have been held in Lausanne, Switzerland; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Seoul, South Korea; Warsaw, Poland; Cologne, Germany; and Beijing, China.

While the National Sports Collectors Convention will be hosted by Chicago in 2011, the multi-billion collectibles premiere show will be returning to Baltimore in 2012.

Topps To Host VIP Auction

The Topps Trading Card Company will open its vault and make 10 unique items available to National Sports Collectors Convention VIP attendees at the first-ever VIP Exclusive Auction. The items range from signed contracts to full proof sheets.

The auction will be held during the VIP reception from 2:30-4 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 3. Bidders will have an opportunity to view the items at the reception before the auction. Winning bidders will be required to pay for any items won immediately at the close of the auction. Cash and credit cards will be accepted.

"We are extremely pleased to be able to present a very exciting event to our VIP attendees who support the show," said show manager Mike Berkus. "Topps will give our VIP attendees a chance to bid on and walk away with some fabulous collectibles from their archives."

Some of the items are signed checks from Topps contracts with players making the auction a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire items no one else has. Items up for auction include:

• 1957-58 Topps Basketball Signed Bill Russell Check
