Cheap Seats: Forrester Tees Off In New Position

Drew Forrester has been a constant on the Baltimore sports scene since he graduated from Glen Burnie High School in 1981. As a first-year broadcasting school student, he was offered an internship position with the Baltimore Blast in the public relations department. Forrester didn't have much previous interest in soccer, but he quickly took to the game, and it spurred his career.

"When I went to my first Blast game in December of 1980, I was a senior in high school," Forrester said, "and by the next year, I was working with them. When I went to that game in 1980, they played Buffalo, and I loved it. I loved indoor soccer way, way more than I liked outdoor soccer."

Forrester's tenure with the Blast's small front office occurred during the heyday of Baltimore soccer. The team was a big draw and became relatively popular within the community.

"We sold out 56 games in a row," Forrester said. "I think it's one of the most amazing things that has ever happened in the history of Baltimore sports. It was definitely a phenomenon. There's no doubt about that."

Forrester ran the Blast's PR department before becoming the team's general manager from 1991-98. Under his watch, the Blast made the playoffs seven out of eight seasons.

With the Blast's season running from fall to spring, Forrester found himself looking for something he could do during the summer to keep his competitive juices flowing. He tried his hand at golf, and he developed a passion for that sport, too.

"I really wasn't playing any sports," he said. "I had played a lot of hockey and a lot of soccer growing up, but I wasn't really doing anything competitive in my 20s. So golf kind of fell into that place from a seasonal standpoint."

Forrester became a scratch golfer and went on to win a variety of public golf tournaments around the city, claiming championships in 2000, 2004 and 2009.

His love of golf led him to launch a golf expo company called Maryland Golf Live. Forrester's company is still active with running summer camps and charity events around the Baltimore area.

In 2002, Forrester's soccer connections paved the way for a new opportunity. When Nestor Aparicio, owner of WNST Radio, was doing his shows during the 1980s, he called Forrester for Blast updates and information. He even asked Forrester to be a World Cup correspondent in 2002.

"It's funny," Forrester said. "The irony is, when I was running the soccer team, [Aparicio] was one of the few media people in town that cared about soccer. We didn't get a whole lot of respect from the media, and that was when there was no football team, which was even more strange."

From that point on, Forrester became a regular personality at WNST, and in July, he celebrated his 10th year behind the microphone at the Towson station, his sixth as host of the morning show.

Forrester's passion for golf hasn't waivered and it's led him in a new direction -- to the Baltimore high school golf scene. He began coaching the John Carroll boys' golf team two years ago, and in October, he was named golf coach at Calvert Hall.

"I'm very blessed to be at Calvert Hall," Forrester said. "They're a staple of the private school landscape in this area. We had a team get-together, and then we start getting ready with the training program I've instituted in mid-January."

Forrester is enjoying his role as coach and a radio personality and said he was looking forward to many more years as a staple of the Baltimore sports scene.

"I love sports and I love to talk sports," Forrester said. "I'm crazy about the Ravens, and I still love the Orioles. So I enjoy going in there every day and talking about it."
