PressBox, GBMC Honor Our Lady Of Mount Carmel's Sarah Conway

March 1, 2016
PressBox and GBMC have teamed up to honor one high school student-athlete each month who demonstrates sportsmanship, school spirit, hard work and dedication.

The latest honoree is Our Lady Of Mount Carmel basketball player Sarah Conway.

GBMC Unsung Hero: Our Lady of Mount Carmel Sarah ConwayTo nominate a student-athlete for consideration, click here.

Conway, a senior, was nominated by Cougars head coach Rob Long, who praised her leadership qualities.

"This is my first year coaching high school basketball," Long said, "and coming here, my daughter was a returning player, and you kind of expect your own daughter to kind of buy in. But you needed a returner to buy in to what you're trying to do, and Sarah was the first one that did that."

In nominating Conway for the Unsung Hero award, Long noted the value Conway has provided the team on and off the court.

"We had a 15U AAU team, and naturally, by her being a senior, she's not 15," Long said. "But she was on the bench with us, practices with us [and] tried to get to know and learn as much as she could. And she really brought into the program. As I said to you before, Sarah has an impact on the game, whether she scores 10 points or zero points.

"We call her 'Momma Bear,' because she kind of keeps everything together, and we're going to miss her. But she epitomizes what the phrase unsung hero is all about."

Conway expressed her gratitude toward Long for the nomination. She will attend Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania in the fall and hasn't decided whether she will continue her basketball career.

"This award means a lot," Conway said. "It's not the first award I've gotten in basketball, but it means a lot to be the unsung hero."

Long, who is a sports-talk radio show host at 105.7 The Fan, noted Conway's contributions to her teammates goes beyond the box score.

"I think they have a tremendous respect for her," Long said. "And again, they look to her for leadership. I'm not talking about statistical leadership -- just her character. I think character is the best word to describe her."
