In dramatically swift fashion, Maryland Live! Casino bolstered its position in the state's gaming marketplace that will include another casino by year's end.
About a week after the
Sept. 13 groundbreaking for a new hotel tower that will adjoin the Live! casino
in Hanover, Md., the Cordish Companies, which owns the casino, announced the acquisition and rebranding of a nearby hotel. The newly christened Live! Lofts (previously a Hilton-branded hotel) gives Maryland Live! immediate access to 250 rooms, 100 of them suites, that can be used as rewards for casino guests.
The two developments -- building a new hotel tower and events center that will open in 2018, and acquiring a hotel that will remain open with renovations planned -- helps better position the Live! Casino in a marketplace that will see another gambling hall soon. Later this year, MGM Resorts International plans to open a casino and hotel, the MGM National Harbor, at the National Harbor entertainment and retail complex near Washington, D.C.
The Cordish Companies will spend $3 million on renovations to transform what was previously a Hilton Garden Inn and Homewood Suites into a boutique hotel that take on an air of "eclectic elegance," according to a company description. The new Live! Lofts is at 7491 New Ridge Rd. and within the sphere of the Arundel Mills Mall, which is adjacent to the Live! casino.
Among the amenities in the 11-story hotel complex will be The Loft Grill, a cocktail lounge, heated indoor pool and spa, meeting space and shuttle transportation to the casino and nearby BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport.
Importantly, Live! Lofts puts the casino in position to offer hotel accommodations to top casino customers immediately. Renovations to the public spaces will begin late this year or early 2017 and continue until mid-2017. In the meantime, rooms will remain available for guests.
The $200 million Live! Hotel that will open in 2018 will be 17 stories, making it the tallest building in Anne Arundel County, it will also feature 310 rooms, a day spa and additional dining options. Also part of the new construction will be an adjoining events center with a 1,500-seat concert venue with a performance stage and banquet seating that will accommodate 800 guests.
Casino owner David Cordish said at the groundbreaking for the Live! Hotel that it was the first of more such hotels to come as the company expands its reach in gaming and hospitality.
Together, Live! Hotel and Live! Lofts will represent 560 guestrooms and suites to go along with a casino that has been not only the highest grossing in revenue in Maryland but also among the leaders in the mid-Atlantic region. Typically, Maryland Live! generates revenue in the mid-$50 million range each month.
