PressBox, GBMC Honor Parkville High School's Michell Ruiz

February 24, 2017
PressBox and GBMC have teamed up to honor one high school student-athlete each month who demonstrates sportsmanship, school spirit, hard work and dedication with the Unsung Hero of the Month award.

The latest honoree is Parkville High School soccer, indoor track and lacrosse athlete Michell Ruiz.

Ruiz, a junior, was nominated by Parkville soccer coach Emily Wolf.

"Michell demonstrates sportsmanship on the field and the track, always playing to her fullest potential and respects her teammates as well as her opponents," Wolf wrote in her nomination. "... To describe Michell as hard working is certainly an understatement. She gives 100 percent effort in everything she is focused on, whether in the classroom or on the athletic field."

In addition to playing three sports at Parkville, Ruiz also excels in the classroom and gives back to the community through activities sponsored by the Key Club and the Maryland JROTC program.

"She's the kind of player who makes a big impact on the field, but she doesn't always know it," Wolf said during the award presentation.

When she graduates from Parkville, Ruiz hopes to go to Maryland or MIT to pursue a degree in engineering or mathematics.

"Receiving this award means that my hard work ... that I put into everything that I do really showed," Ruiz said.

Wolf added: "What makes Michell most deserving of this award is her selfless and unassuming nature which makes her a truly wonderful student, athlete, teammate and all-around person."
