Admirals War Chest Seeks Historic Maryland Million Classic Victory

October 20, 2017
Admirals War Chest will be chasing history when he breaks from the starting gate in the $150,000 Maryland Million Classic at Laurel Park Oct. 21, but he'll be doing it as something of an underdog.

Admirals War Chest, who is listed at 10-1 in the morning line and will start from the No. 1 post position, is trying to win his third straight Classic, the marquee event of the 32nd annual Jim McKay Maryland Million Day program. Maryland Million Day features a total of 11 races, seven of them stakes races and four starter stakes. The Classic is run over 1 1/8 miles for 3-year olds and up and will feature a 12-horse field.

Post time for the first race is 12:15 p.m.

While Admirals War Chest may wind up being the crowd favorite, the odds favorite in the morning line is John Jones at 2-1 followed by Bonus Points at 3-1. John Jones has the No. 2 post position and Bonus Points will come out of the No. 5 chute.

A triumph Saturday would make Admirals War Chest the second horse to win the Classic three times but the first to do it in consecutive years. Eighttofasttocatch won in 2011, 2013 and 2014 before being retired.

If the 6-year old gelding gets the Classic hat trick, he will join Ben's Cat (2010-2012), Countus (1989-1991), Docent (2001-2003), Eighttofasttocatch, Mz. Zill Bear (1993-1995) and Safely Kept (1989-1991) as the only three-time winners in Million history.

"We're pretty excited about trying to get that done," Admirals War Chest trainer Corby Caiazzo said. "It's been a rocky road for him this year, but we're looking to rebound and he's starting to do really good again. Hopefully he'll peak on Saturday. It's a one-shot chance to do it three years in a row."

Admirals War Chest has had just one start in 2017. That was a 1-mile optional claiming allowance Oct. 8 at Laurel in which he dueled for the lead for 4 furlongs before fading to fifth in his first race in nearly 11 months.

Although Admirals War Chest is 10-1 in the morning line, it's worth mentioning he wasn't favored in either of his Classic wins. He edged Bullheaded Boy by a neck in 2015 and breezed to a 3 1/2-length win against Bullheaded Boy again last year.
