Juveniles Return To Spotlight At Laurel Park Dec. 9

December 7, 2017
This weekend at Laurel Park, four stakes races will be featured on the Saturday, Dec. 9 race card, including two for juveniles that will offer purses of $100,000 each.

Maryland-bred/sired horses will compete in the $100,000 Maryland Juvenile Futurity for 2-year-olds, and the $100,000 Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship for 2-year-old fillies. Both of those races are at seven furlongs.

In addition, older horses will run in the $75,000 Howard M. Bender Memorial for 3-year-olds and up, and in the $100,000 Willa On the Move, an open event for fillies and mares 3-and-up. Both of those races will be at six furlongs.

Of special interest among the juveniles are promising 2-year-olds Clever Mind and Limited View. Clever Mind faces five other horses in the Maryland Juvenile Futurity. Limited View is in 10-horse field in the Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship.

Interestingly, both Clever Mind and Limited View went from last to first in their respective races on Maryland Million Day six weeks ago. Clever Mind was behind by 11 lengths with a half-mile to go and won. Limited View was behind by 13 lengths early in the race and came six-wide to win.

A horse to watch in the Willa on the Move race, is multiple stakes winner Shimmering Aspen. Although she was beaten in her most recent race in November at seven furlongs as a favorite, she has five wins in nine outings at Laurel Park. For this upcoming race she is being cut back to six furlongs, and the last time she raced at that distance, she was a winner last year.

In the spirit of the holidays, Laurel Park with hold a Breakfast with Santa Dec. 9 (bring a camera for photos). The event is 10-11:30 a.m. in the Ruffian Room (second floor, clubhouse). The buffet is $7 for children 12-and-under, and $12 for adults. Reservations are recommended. Call 301-725-0770.

Live racing at Laurel Park at this time of year begins on Fridays and runs through Mondays. First race post time is 12:30 p.m. There will be a jackpot carryover of $1,970.46 in the 20-cent Rainbow 6 when live racing resumes with a nine-race card Dec. 8.
