Justify became the second horse to win the Triple Crown in four years. American Pharaoh accomplished the feat in 2015. Prior to that, the last Triple Crown winner was Affirmed in 1978.

Justify was jockeyed by Mike Smith and trained by Bob Baffert. The Belmont Stakes victory represented Smith's seventh win of a Triple Crown race and Baffert's 15th. It's the first Triple Crown for Smith and second for Baffert, who trained American Pharaoh.
Justify drew the inside post and led wire-to-wire June 9. Gronkowski finished in second after a tough start and Hofburg came in third. It was a 10-horse race. Justify held off a late charge by Bravazo during the Preakness Stakes May 19 to have a shot at the Triple Crown.
