Maryland Basketball Climbs In AP Top 25, USA Today Coaches Poll

After a 1-1 week, the University of Maryland men's basketball team climbed to No. 23 in the AP poll and the USA Today Coaches Poll, released Dec. 3.

Gonzaga (8-0) retains the top spot in both polls, followed by Kansas (6-0), Duke (7-1), Virginia (7-0) and Michigan (8-0).

Maryland is now 7-1 on the season, with a 1-0 record in Big Ten play. During the past week, the Terps lost to Virginia, 76-71, at home Nov. 28 and defeated Penn State, 66-59, Dec. 1.

Against Virginia, sophomore forward Bruno Fernando posted a double double with 14 points and 11 rebounds as the Terps outscored the Cavaliers, 41-37, during the second half but couldn't make up for a nine-point halftime deficit

Against Penn State, freshman forward scored Jalen Smith led the way with 16 points and junior guard Anthony Cowan added 15 as the Terps won their Big Ten opener.

Up next, Maryland hits the road to face Purdue Dec. 6 before returning home to face Loyola-Chicago at Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore Dec. 8.
