The shortstop position took a major hit this past week with Trevor Story (Colorado Rockies) and Adalberto Mondesi (Kansas City Royals) landing on the injured list. Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa remains out, so the position is thinning. We have officially reached the time of the season when injuries can begin to take a toll. As always, we just need to continue to grind through this and find ways to weather the storm.
Colorado Rockies Infielder Brendan Rodgers --
recommended earlier this season
when a wave of prospects were promoted. Unfortunately, he didn’t perform and went back to Triple-A. Story landing on the injured list now clears a path for Rodgers to play on an everyday basis. The talent is there -- he was hitting .350 with nine home runs in the minors -- and we know we love targeting offensive players on the Rockies. Rodgers will be the top priority in leagues this week, so you may have to spend a big chunk of your free agency acquisition budget to get him.
Cleveland Indians Outfielder Oscar Mercado -- Mercado is another young prospect who took a little while to get going, but he's getting consistent playing time and is putting up numbers. He is hitting .316 with 26 runs scored in 30 games. Mercado has also chipped in with six steals and is batting near the top of the lineup, which is fantasy gold. Mercado is quickly reaching the 50 percent ownership threshold, so hop on the bandwagon now.
Pittsburgh Pirates Outfielder Bryan Reynolds -- The 24-year-old is scorching hot right now, as he is hitting .362 with six home runs and 31 runs scored. Like Mercado, Reynolds is batting near the top of the order and is playing consistently. These are the types of players we are looking for when hitting the waiver wire.
