I'll stress this over the next few weeks, but at this point in the season, we are targeting certain categories on the waiver wire. It's difficult to find players who will help across the board as they are most likely rostered.
However, we can still find players who may help in the strikeout category or the home run category. The point is that we need to identify the categories we can still improve on and attack those players.
Cincinnati Reds Outfielder Aristides Aquino -- When you hit a home run that ties for the hardest hit long ball in baseball this season, fantasy owners need to take notice. That is exactly what Aquino did Aug. 8 and now has three home runs in just seven games. The downside is he also has struck out seven times. This goes back to targeting players for certain categories, as the 25-year-old should help in the home run category but the batting average may be low.
San Diego Padres Starting Pitcher Dinelson Lamet -- The 27-year-old has finally showed flashes of his former self prior to Tommy John surgery, as he struck out 12 in seven innings Aug. 6. Since returning July 4, the right-hander has had at least three appearances in which has finished with seven strikeouts. I'm hoping this is the beginning of Lamet dominating down the stretch to give fantasy owners a huge boost.
Atlanta Braves Starting Pitcher Mike Foltynewicz -- It has been a disaster of a season for the pitcher who ended 2018 with a 2.85 ERA. An injury to start the season and struggles have led the right-hander to a 6.26 ERA. However, in his latest start, Foltynewicz struck out seven and only allowed three earned runs. I'm not sure if this is the start of a strong finish to the season, but if you are looking for strikeouts, Foltynewicz can be your guy. We're at this point in the season when we can't afford a dud of a start, so if you want to pick up the righty and then see if he can put back-to-back strong starts, I can get on board with that. I can even get on board of giving him one start and if he struggles, you cut bait immediately This is definitely a high-risk, high-reward waiver-wire target.
