We have reached Labor Day weekend, which means a few things. First, you have probably had a couple of fantasy football drafts and may have a couple more with the season a week away. It can be difficult to juggle both, but if we do, I'm positive you will be rewarded.
Second, teams will begin promoting minor leaguers as rosters expand Sept. 1. This can have a huge fantasy impact, as players who have been playing a lot may play not as much if they are on a bad team and the organization wants to look at younger players. We can take advantage of this.
Finally, there's only a month left of the season. The grind is almost over, but the focus needs to be just as sharp.
Texas Rangers Outfielder Willie Calhoun -- The 24-year-old is having himself a monster August, as he has homered nine times and is batting better than .280. For the season, Calhoun is batting .284 with 16 home runs, 35 RBIs and 35 runs scored. However, his hot streak is why we are targeting the youngster as he should provide help in multiple categories down the stretch.
Oakland Athletics First Baseman Mark Canha -- Canha barely makes the cut for recommendation as he is right at the 50 percent threshold, but I figured I would spotlight the power hitter. Canha is batting .360 and has hit six home runs in August. He's exactly the type of hitter we need to grab off the waiver wire down the stretch. Not only is he red hot, but he's hitting in the middle of the order.
St. Louis Cardinals Second Baseman Kolten Wong -- It has been a strong second half for Wong, as he is batting .363 for the Cardinals. Wong won't help in the home run category, but that second-half batting average is hard to ignore along with his stolen bases (18 for the season). If we can get a few steals along with the same high batting average, we'll have a nice player during the final month.
Seattle Mariners Reliever Matt Magill -- Sometimes we find fantasy contributions from players we have never heard of. That brings us to Magill, a 29-year-old who has never pitched 60 innings in his career. However, since Aug. 17, he's been a major fantasy contributor as he has locked down four saves for the Mariners. Seattle is not a good team, but it's hard to pass up on a pitcher who is locking down the ninth inning this late in the season.
