July 3, 2006

He was born in Panama, where his parents and grandparents moved to from mainland China.

But as a sports fan, he is just like anybody else -- anybody who likes cheese fries and the Phillie Phanatic, that is.

PressBox took a few minutes to learn moreĀ about Bruce Chen the fan.

Q: As a kid who is the sports star you admired most?
A: Dwight Gooden.

Q: Who is the sports star you admire most now?
A: Greg Maddux.

Q: Greatest personal athletic achievement?
A: Making it to the big leagues.

Q: Do you have season tickets to see any teams?
A: No.

Q: What is the best song to hear at a sporting event?
A: Best song? (sings) We will, we will rock you.

Q: What's the worst?
A: The one that they play all the time over there in Boston, I don't know, it sounds so bad. Kevin Millar might know it. It sounds like (sings) "So good, so good." I don't know though, I hate it.

Q: What's the best food to eat at a sporting event?
A: What is the best food? Cheese fries.

Q: The food that you can't believe that they serve at a sporting event?
A: In Ottawa they have this like, fried dough, like an elephant ear, have you heard of that?

Q: Funnel cake?
A: Yeah! I can't believe they sell that. It's like carnival food.

Q: Foam finger or face paint?
A: Foam finger.

Q: Designated hitter, yes or no?
A: Yes.

Q: Astroturf or grass?
A: Grass.

Q: What's the best rivalry in sports?
A: The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees.

Q: What's the best mascot?
A: The Phillie Phanatic... It is. I mean, the other mascots, they're good and everything but the Phillie Phanatic, he just has all these things. He's funny. I mean, he's just very animated.

Q: If you could be any sports figure in history for one day who would it be?
A: Michael Jordan. I would love to be like that.

Q: What's your best little league memory?
A: I wasn't that good when I was little. I got good when I was 14. It's cheesy. One time I went out there and I helped my team make it. I was nine years old and I pitched to the hardest team and because we won 4-0, we made it to the championship game. I made it to the championship game, you know?

Q: What's your favorite sports movie?
A: "For Love of the Game." Or "The Rookie!" It's a tie, I love "The Rookie."

Q: What's the position you secretly want to play?
A: Shortstop. Or centerfield. Well, I mean, I want to play shortstop, I always wanted to play shortstop but I know I'm not good. I know I can play centerfield. If I had a chance I could play centerfield. I know I'd be decent. But there's no way I could play shortstop. It's a toss-up.

Q: What's your favorite beer?
A: My favorite beer? I have to think, you know I don't drink that much. But whenever I go out, Corona.

Q: What's your favorite ballpark?
A: Well I like Fenway Park and I like Wrigley Field and I like Camden Yards but you know, Fenway Park or Wrigley Field. More tradition.

Q: Who are you pulling for in the World Cup?
A: I'm pulling for Germany.
